The Enugu state police command has locked up the Mount Street Parish of Assemblies of God Church, Nigeria after two pastors and their loyalists engaged in a free-for-all fight.
The two pastors and their supporters fought over who should take control of the parish.
Apparently there has been an ongoing crisis in the church for more than three years as two persons, Professor Paul Emeka and Dr. Chidi Okoroafor are each laying claims to the leadership of the church, a position known as General Superintendent, a matter that is currently before the Supreme Court, Vanguard reports.
The drama was said to have started on Sunday, July 19, when one of the pastors, Rev. Nathaniel Udeze, came with letters of posting and other court documents as part of preparations to be installed as the new pastor at the parish
According to him, he had been officially posted there by the leadership of the church under Rev. Paul Emeka, adding that Rev. Amaechi Agbo had been transferred to another parish since May 2015.
He was however resisted by Rev, Agbo and his supporters, who accused him of being an intruder and vowed not to allow him take over.
The trouble degenerated when supporters of both pastors arrived and started sharing different versions of Sunday school manual in preparation for the main service.
Both pastors threw caution to the wind and reportedly started shoving each other and their supporters followed suit, engaging in fisticuffs.
The police had to be called to restore order. On arrival, the divisional police officer, Dennis Ayara tried to calm the warring parties but all his efforts to bring the situation under control proved futile.
The led to the eventual shutdown of the church premises as the police cordoned off the place and put it under lock, while the leaders of the two factions were asked to report to the station.

The newly appointed Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, has said there was need for synergy of intelligence amongst all security forces, without which it would be difficult to defeat Boko Haram.
During a courtesy visit on Sunday, July 19, to the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Elkanemi, Buratai said the dreaded Boko Haram sect would either beg for peace or face the wrath of highly motivated and combat ready soldiers under his command, Sahara Reporters reports.
“We will need the support of the royal father and the people of Borno so that we will ensure peace returns here. Since Boko Haram terrorists have refused peace (Zaman Lafiya), we will now force them to accept peace,” he said.
Earlier, while addressing soldiers at the 103 Battalion of the 7 Division, Maiduguri in Konduga Town, Buratai said, he was ready to lead soldiers to the dens and enclaves of the insurgents.
The new army chief renamed the operational code for the ongoing war on the Boko Haram from Operation Zaman Lafiya (Living in Peace) to Operation Zaman Lafiya Dole (the quest for peace becomes a must).
He called for the maximum support and cooperation of the soldiers, saying he would be actively involved in Operation Zaman Lafiya Dole to end the madness of Boko Haram.
Buratai said: “The ongoing activities of Boko Haram is assuming an alarming dimensions in Borno state and other parts of the north east.
“We will not tolerate the killing of citizens and destruction of property; in as much as we urge you (troops) to adhere strictly to human rights abuses, the time to crush Hoko Haram and other criminal activities in this country is now or never.”
The Borno state-born Major General, who took over command of the nation’s army last week, also called for the general collaboration amongst the troops and other security agencies as well as the general public in curbing Boko Haram activities.
Buratai had earlier promised that the Nigerian army under his watch would restructure its operations to effectively tackle the insurgency ravaging the Northeastern part of the country.

On July 19, Sunday, hundreds of Osun state residents trooped to the Winners Chapel in Osogbo to partake of the food aid sent by the Presiding Bishop of the church, Bishop David Oyedepo.
Earlier this week, the state pastor of the Living Faith Church, Olumuyiwa Emmanuel, announced during his service that the truck loaded with food donation would arrive for distribution. He directed church members to invite their friends and neighbours, irrespective of their religious affiliations.
Pastor Emmanuel noted that the food stuffs were sent to assist workers and others to cope with the hardship caused by non-payment of salaries.
“The church has been blessed to be a blessing to others. Irrespective of their religious affiliations, we are blessed to affect the lives of others positively. That is the reason why the church has been giving to the less privileged ones. We have been distributing food items to members and non members. The church also distributed food stuffs last month.
“God does not bless people so that they can be a container, he blesses people so that they can bless others and all of us must be doing that.
“Rather than acquisition of wealth, we should cultivate the habit of giving to those around us, and in return we would receive more blessings from God,” he said.
The Punch reports that after the second service Pastor Emmanuel announced that anyone interested in being a partaker of the largesse should wait. Informing people about free medical treatment for all manner of ailments and diseases next Sunday, he called on church members to invite anyone they knew that needed medical attention to come and benefit from the free services.
Few minutes after the announcement, there was a long queue of people who were waiting patiently for the distribution of the food. They were given rice, packets of tomato paste and vegetable oil.
Osun residents who received donation expressed gratitude to the church for its help. Some of them noted that the nation would be a better place if religious and corporate organisations, individuals started considering the less privileged ones.
Aregbesola in a statement on Sunday issued by his media aide, Semiu Okanlawon, described the claim as “unfounded”that his administration has concluded plans to sack more than 10,000 workers.
The governor accused the PDP of planning to pull down his government as well as instigate the people of the state against him.
He said, “The so-called plan to sack 10,000 workers is in the imagination of the Peoples Democratic Party. Discerning and decent people have come to the inevitable conclusion that when PDP makes any allegation, you must quickly dismiss it as being in its character to fabricate falsehood in order to confuse the unsuspecting masses.
“This latest falsehood is part of its calculated move to misinform workers, confuse them and demoralise them. Nowhere has the Aregbesola administration signified any intention to sack any worker.”

The APC top leaders are reportedly upset over Buhari’s refusal to name his cabinet members after spending over a month in power. Some APC leaders are worried that the president’s delay in constituting a cabinet may negatively affect the current administration.
Nigerian Tribune reports that the delay in the unveiling of the much-awaited ministerial list after President Mohammadu Buhari’s two months in office is connected to the fact that about 33 nominees were found to be linked to malfeasance, fraud and misappropriation of funds.

While only three out of the 36 nominees successfully passed, it came as a shock to know that 33 nominees shortlisted by the president failed the corruption test which was based on security reports. It was revealed to Nigerian Tribune that the nominees penciled in and those submitted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) hierarchy were subjected to scrutiny by the DSS, EFCC, ICPC, CBN, the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID), and the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) for forensic screening. However, the results came as a huge disappointment to the president who planned to have a corruption-free administration.
The president was held spellbound by the height of some of these nominees who did not pass the corruption test. This made the president to reschedule a new date in September for the submission of his list of ministerial nominees to the Senate for approval. This new list that the president will come up with would have passed the integrity huddle.
A source said: “Buhari has said anybody with skeleton in the closet will not work with him irrespective of the role he or she played. If such persons are around him, it means he may be pressurised to compromise his principled stance”.
Today, Sunday July 19, President Muhammadu Buhari left Abuja for the USA with his 33-man delegation, on July 20, the Nigerian leader will meet his American counterpart, Barack Obama.
As it was reported earlier, the leaders are planning to discuss a “holistic, regional approach to combating Boko Haram” and important economic and political reforms in Nigeria.
Speaking about the president’s four-day-stay in America, Nigeria’s ambassador to the US, Professor Ade Adefuye, stressed that the visit was important for both countries because Nigeria and the US remain partners on many fronts.
“The importance of the visit is in the fact that the US is accommodating President Buhari at Blair House, the first of its kind for a Nigerian leader and at no expense to the country,” the ambassador added.
Ahead of Buhari’s visit to the USA, Johnnie Carson, a former assistant secretary of state, has stated that Nigeria is the most important country in Africa and must be treated as such.
Carson noted that the discussion between Nigeria and America should not be restricted to insecurity adding that both countries need closer trade and investment ties.
Similarly, Tony Blinken, the US deputy secretary of state, revealed that “Obama has long seen Nigeria as arguably the most important strategic country in sub-Saharan Africa.”

In an exclusive interview with SaharaTV correspondent, Adeola Fayehun, Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, discussed a host of issues ranging from Radio Biafra to Boko Haram. In the interview Mr. Shehu said that President Buhari has vowed to the bring back funds stolen by government officials in the past.
When asked about whether former Minister of Commerce Onyaku went to the Presidential Villa to beg President Buhari not to probe members of President Jonathan’s cabinet, Shehu denied that Onyaku asked Buhari to not probe Jonathan.
Mr. Shehu admitted that he is not at liberty to say whether or not Jonathan’s ministers would be probed, he reaffirmed that Buhari administration is commitment to recovering stolen money.
“Whoever has taken money from Nigeria that does not belong to them, Buhari’s word is to bring it back,” Shehu stated.
Fayehun also asked Mr. Shehu about issues concerning the Nigerian military’s fight against Boko Haram. Amongst them was the recent replacement of the nation’s military Chiefs and whether the Hausa tribe was overrepresented in Buhari’s selections.
Shehu responded that “merit was the yardstick that was used to generate these appointments. I don’t think it will be helpful for us to be counting the number of Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo appointments. That’s why the country is in the position where it is today.
“[President Buhari] has over 6,000 appointments to make. Now why would anyone use less than 10 appointments to judge a President on this matter? Again, it balls down to the lack of patience,” Shehu added.
Concerning the recent reemergence of Biafra Radio Mr. Shehu made it a point to say that it was a fringe effort to ineffectively dissolve the country.
”The issue of the oneness of the country had been settled by the civil government, and Nigerians have moved on. I don’t think people should take this fringe group seriously because they do not represent the majority of the country.”
Responding to the rumors that the U.S. will try to push President Buhari a reverse Nigerian anti-gay law and during his visit to Washington D.C. next week he emphasized the importance of the opinion of the country as a whole.
“The president of Nigeria will address the question when it is raised. Even if President Buhari holds a contrary opinion, he is one person, and he cannot ignore the domestic opinion of the country.”
Diezani Alison-Madueke, a former minister of petroleum resources, has allegedly offered a generous refund to the federal government in order to get immunity from prosecution and investigations of any kind.
According to the information by Sahara Reporters, the offered sum equals at least $250 million dollars. Its correspondent also learnt that President Buhari is not in position to accept any compensations.
An insider source at the presidential villa revealed that the ex-minister counts on Governor Nasir El-Rufai to assist her in negotiations with the president. However, the positive outcome is unlikely:
“Mr President considers the $250 million as ridiculous considering the amount of money Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke is suspected to have diverted into her pocket and those of others,” an unnamed APC member told the journalist.
Alison-Madueke’s move can be explained by the upcoming meeting between US Attorney General Loretta Lynch and President Buhari during his visit to the USA.

The Department of State Services has detained Gordon Obua, the Chief Security Officer to former President Goodluck Jonathan.
It was learnt that Obua was arrested last Thursday and detained at the DSS headquarters in Abuja.
His detention, our correspondent gathered, was part of the probe of officials under Jonathan’s administration ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The reason for Gordon’s detention could not be immediately established, but it was gathered that investigators may extract salient information on key officials in Jonathan’s government from the former CSO.
Sources stated that the detention of the former security aide to Jonathan was meant to show that no former official in the past government would be spared if found to have mismanaged or embezzled public funds.
“The arrest and detention of the former CSO is an indication that every former minister or senior official under Jonathan’s government are not exempted from probe except those that have no criminal suspicion or record of wrong doing in office,” a source explained.
The DSS had last Thursday moved against the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki, seized his passport and other vital documents and prevented him from leaving the house for about 24 hours.
Findings indicated that many more former officials would be visited and arrested by the DSS which has been mandated by Buhari to recover all looted public funds by the previous government functionaries.
The DSS could not be reached for comment as it has not announced a replacement for its former spokesperson, Marilyn Ogar, who was removed from the agency’s Public Relations Department last week.
But a former Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Tsav, said Obua might have breached a security regulation hence his arrest and detention, noting that nobody is above the law.
He said,
“Security is the most important thing in a nation and if he (Obua) had breached a law, he could be arrested and detained. If his former boss (Jonathan), had immunity while in office, he doesn’t have immunity. So, he must have done something wrong for them to have arrested him, I think they (DSS) are in order.”

The General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William F. Kumuyi and Nigerian foremost gospel artiste, Panam Percy Paul, yesterday stormed communities in Taraba State with the message of hope and salvation.
The crusade, with the theme, ‘Total recovery and restoration,’ attracted thousands of participants from across church denominations as well as localities within and outside the state.
According to the organisers, the crusade which held in three different locations namely, Jalingo, Zing and Bali, was aimed at bringing the message of redemption, restoration and total recovery to the people especially in the face of security challenges bedeviling the northeast region.
Speaking at the Jalingo crusade, Pastor Kumuyi assured the mammoth participants that God was set to bring them out of their ‘Red Sea’ and cross them over to the Promised Land of abundance if they would surrender their lives to Jesus Christ.
According to Pastor Kumuyi, God always opens the door to those who knock and seek Him.
“If you have Jesus, you have more than a man; this is the day of your healing, salvation and deliverance. If a sinner agrees with the Lord, he will be saved,” he said.
Gospel music legend, Panam Percy Paul and his team also ministered in songs at the programme.
Many participants received healing and multitudes gave their lives to God during the crusade. (Report from Leadership News)
